01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Standing before rows of liquor bottles illuminated across the bar counter, taking time to decide what fills your glass is part of the classic bar ritual. Perched on the 2th floor of a building close to the East Exit of Ikebukuro Station, BAR Genkaware Ikebukuro works on an unusual system: for an entry charge of 1,700 yen, guests can order spirits and small bites at prices remarkably close to cost.
The weighty menu spans single malts, independent bottlers, and limited small-batch releases. Benchmarks and rare expressions from Japanese distilleries—including Yamazaki, Hakushu, Hibiki, Taketsuru, and Ichiro's Malt—stand alongside spirits from across the globe, such as Talisker, Longrow, and Old Grand-Dad 114. Because whiskies can be ordered in half-shots, it is easy to line up small pours of mature vintages or distinct cask finishes that might otherwise feel like an indulgence. Asking the bartenders about production backgrounds and tasting notes makes discovering your next favourite glass part of the fun.
Beyond whisky, the bar keeps a versatile list of cocktails and wines. Liqueur-led concoctions such as a Grasshopper reminiscent of mint chocolate, an approachable China Blue, and a Cacao Fizz, along with wine-based staples like Kir and Spritzers, are offered at welcoming prices starting in the 100-yen bracket. Between drinks, consider savoury accompaniments such as a premium burger pairing a savoury patty with a lift of lemon, rich fresh chocolate truffles to round off a sweet finish, or a plate of prosciutto and smoked bacon.
With around 6 counter seats and a handful of tables, the compact interior balances the calm air of a cocktail bar with a comfortable buzz. During busier spells, stays are often kept to around 2 to 2 and a half hours, and seats fill quickly in the evening and over weekends, making reservations or calling ahead sensible. Payment can be made with major credit cards or PayPay. On Fridays and Saturdays, doors stay open until 4:00 the following morning, offering a dependable haven when you want to explore the shelves deep into the night.
